You google your company name and see a Reddit thread on page one: "Has anyone used [brand]? Looks like a scam." It has 40 comments, half of them angry, some not even about you.

Not long ago that thread would have been buried on page five. Today Reddit ranks at the top for branded searches, in the "Discussions and forums" block and among AI Overview sources.

The first instinct is to get it removed. Sometimes that's possible, but usually it isn't. Reddit doesn't decide who is right in a dispute between a customer and a company, and Google doesn't remove criticism just because it's unpleasant.

So the work comes down to three steps: check what can legitimately be removed, respond properly in the thread, and push it out of the top results. Let's go through each.

Why Reddit ranks so high for branded searches

Since 2023 Reddit's visibility in Google has grown many times over. In 2024 Google and Reddit signed a data access agreement, and Reddit discussions became a prominent part of search results.

For branded searches this matters for three reasons:

  • People search for Reddit on purpose. Queries like "brand reddit", "brand reviews reddit" and "is brand legit" are how people look for real opinions instead of marketing.
  • The thread says a lot about the brand. The company name appears in the title and dozens of times in comments, and fresh replies keep the page "alive".
  • AI uses Reddit as a source. AI Overviews and ChatGPT often cite these discussions, so a negative thread ends up in AI answers. More on that in why your brand is not in ChatGPT.

Start with a diagnosis: how dangerous is the thread

Not every negative thread needs urgent work. Before doing anything, answer a few questions.

  • Which queries does it rank for? Check the brand name, "brand reddit", "brand reviews", "brand scam" and "is brand legit" in every country where you have customers.
  • Where exactly does it show? A regular top-3 result is more dangerous than a card at the bottom of the "Discussions and forums" block.
  • Is it alive? If the last comment was two years ago, the thread will sink over time. If people are commenting now, waiting is not an option.
  • What does it say? A real complaint, a misunderstanding, false claims or employees' personal data. The strategy depends on this.
  • Who posted it? A customer, a former employee, a competitor or an account created for a single post.
  • Which subreddit? Each has its own rules and moderators, which affects the chances of removal.

Based on the answers, the thread falls into one of four situations, and each has its own plan.

What can be removed and what can't

The author can delete it

If the complaint was real and you've resolved it, you can politely ask the author to update or delete the post. This works best once the issue is actually closed: money refunded, access restored.

Keep in mind that a deleted post shows as [deleted], and comments may stay visible. Google keeps showing the old title and snippet for a while, until it recrawls the page.

To speed this up, use Google's Refresh Outdated Content tool. Anyone can submit a request, not just site owners. Google checks that the post was removed or the text changed and then updates or drops the result.

Subreddit moderators

Moderators remove posts that break community rules: self-promotion, off-topic posts, personal attacks, duplicates. If the thread breaks a specific rule, message the moderators via modmail, cite the rule and include the link.

Keep it calm and short. Threats and demands almost always backfire.

Bad: "Remove this defamation or we will sue."

Better: "This post breaks rule 3 of the subreddit: it includes our employee's name and phone number. Please remove or edit that information."

Reddit admins

Admins handle violations of Reddit's sitewide rules: harassment, sharing personal information, impersonating a person or a company, spam and vote manipulation. Use the Report button under the post or the forms in Reddit Help.

Plain criticism of a company, even harsh criticism, is not a violation.

The legal route

If the thread contains false statements of fact, you can take the legal route, but it's slow.

  • Reddit, like most platforms, doesn't decide whether accusations are true. Removal for defamation usually requires a court decision.
  • In the US, platforms are protected by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, so claims are usually aimed at the author, not at Reddit.
  • In the UK and the EU, a properly drafted legal notice about clearly unlawful content carries noticeably more weight.
  • Google has a separate form for removing content for legal reasons. Note that Google publishes many of these requests in the public Lumen database, which can make the thread more visible.

What won't help

Google's "Results about you" tool removes personal information about individuals from search: phone numbers, home addresses, emails. It doesn't remove criticism of a company.

If it can't be removed: working with the thread itself

Reply from an official account

A good company reply often turns a negative thread into proof that the brand responds. To do it right:

  • create an account with a clear name, for example u/Brand_Support, and fill in the profile;
  • reply once, calmly and factually: what happened, what you've already done, where to reach you to resolve it;
  • don't argue with every commenter;
  • once the issue is resolved, add an update: "Update: resolved, funds were refunded on May 12."

Bad: "These are lies from competitors. We are the best platform on the market."

Better: "Hi, this is [brand] support. In March payouts were delayed while we switched payment providers; all requests have now been processed. If your case is still open, send your ticket number to support@... and we'll sort it out within 24 hours."

Don't fake it

Fake accounts, a flood of "positive" replies and vote manipulation break Reddit's rules. The community notices quickly, accounts get banned, and a new thread appears next to the old one: "[brand] is faking reviews". That one will be worse.

How to push the thread out of Google's top results

If the thread can't be removed, the goal is to have other pages rank above it for the same queries. That takes assets Google is willing to rank for your brand.

  • An official subreddit. r/YourBrand with an FAQ, news and support replies. For "brand reddit" it can rank above the negative thread.
  • New discussions with real users. An AMA with the founder, a product update, a breakdown of common questions. A fresh thread with an active discussion often overtakes an old one.
  • A Trustpilot profile with replies to reviews, plus G2 and Capterra for SaaS.
  • A page on your site that addresses doubts: "Is [brand] legit?", licenses, company details, payout times.
  • Media coverage, YouTube, LinkedIn and industry platforms.

New pages alone can take a long time to climb. They're reinforced with links from relevant sites so Google sees their weight. The method is covered in how to push down negative search results on Google.

An example from buylink's work: for a FinTech company, eight managed assets reached Google's top 10 within 60 days, including Trustpilot, media articles, social profiles and Reddit threads. The target thread moved from outside the top 10 to the top positions, with a campaign budget of $1,500. Full breakdown in the case study B2B SERM: capturing branded search results.

Timelines and costs

  • Removal by the author or moderators: from a few days, if there are grounds.
  • Legal route: months, with no guaranteed outcome.
  • Displacement for branded queries: usually 1-3 months. Longer if the story was picked up by media or the brand competes with large portals.

Buylink's price guide: basic displacement of 1-2 negative URLs from $1,500 for the US and Europe (from $500 for CIS markets), Reddit work from $990 per month for the US and Europe. Details on the SERM and Reddit marketing pages.

Common mistakes

  • Demanding removal with threats. Moderators pin messages like that, and the thread gets a second wave of attention.
  • Replying from ten accounts. Astroturfing is visible, and a ban plus a new thread cost more than the original problem.
  • Staying silent. A thread without a company reply looks like confirmation of the complaint.
  • Working only on Reddit. If AI Overviews quote the thread or a "brand scam" autocomplete suggestion shows up, handle them together. There's a separate guide on that: how to remove negative Google autocomplete suggestions.
  • Waiting for the thread to sink. Active discussions with fresh comments grow; they don't sink.

Summary

A negative Reddit thread is rarely removed: only when it breaks subreddit or Reddit rules, contains personal information or is found unlawful. In every other case, what works is a company response plus displacement.

The order: assess how dangerous the thread is and which queries it ranks for. File reports where there are real grounds. Reply once, calmly and factually. Then get an official subreddit, new discussions, Trustpilot, media coverage and your own pages into the top results so the negative thread drops off page one.

FAQ

Short answers about handling negative Reddit discussions that rank on Google.

Can Google remove a Reddit post about my company?

Only if the post has already been deleted or edited on Reddit: then you can request an update through Google's Refresh Outdated Content tool. Google doesn't remove the thread itself while it's live and lawful.

Does Reddit remove posts for defamation?

Usually only with a court decision or clearly unlawful content. Reddit doesn't investigate who is right in a dispute between a customer and a company.

What happens if the author deletes the post?

The post shows as [deleted], and comments may remain. Google keeps showing the old title for a while until it recrawls the page.

Should we reply in a negative thread?

Yes, if the reply is calm, comes from an official account and offers a concrete resolution. A thread without a company reply looks like confirmation of the complaint.

How long does it take to push a thread out of Google's top results?

Usually 1-3 months for branded queries. It depends on how fresh and active the thread is and whether the brand has other strong pages.

Can we create positive threads ourselves?

You can start discussions as the company: AMAs, news, support answers. Fake accounts and vote manipulation break Reddit's rules and usually end in bans and a new wave of negativity.
